How are you? We've got just FOUR DAYS to go before EASTER HOLIDAYS, when you will have time to relax and feel satisfied after your hard work. But today...





 Let's get down to work!  Follow these steps:

 1) We are going to do some REVISION on MODAL VERBS. Here are three interesting links to liveworksheets.

Try as many times as you need in order to get your answers right!. When you manage to get a 10/10 in one of these worksheets, take a picture and send it to my mail.

MONDAY, 30th MARCH

Good morning everyone,

Today our lesson is focused on WRITING SKILLS. We are going to learn/remember how to write a NARRATIVE.

Follow these steps. Work seriously and conscientiously!:

1- Let's start by reading a model: Open your book at page 70. Do activities 1 and 2. Do them in your notebook.


2- When we write a narrative, Time Expressions -to describe when something happened - (during, while, before, after, when, as soon as) and Connectors of Sequence - to make the order of events clearer-  (in the beginning, (at) first, then, later, after a while, eventually(=in the end), at last, in the end, finally) are vital.

      Now, do activity 3 on page 70 and activity 4 on page 71 (you can do them in your book in pencil).


3- Find the answers to these activities by clicking HERE. Check your activities.


4- Read this PRESENTATION on HOW TO WRITE A NARRATIVE very attentively. You can take notes in your notebook.

5) TASK. Imagine your school is running a competition for the best short story starting with the words...:
A- "One pound and thirty-two pence. Three times I counted it"
B- "When........ moved away, I felt that my world had come to an end"
C- "How long have yout kept a secret?"
D- "We all came to a new country carrying no more than thoughts and memories of the past."
E- "This was the first time I had been given a gift."

or ending with the words:
F- "It was only then that I realised they had mistaken me for someone else"
G- "And in the other room, ............. began to giggle"
H- "Let it be said that of all who give gifts, these two were the wisest"

Choose ONE from A - H and  WRITE A NARRATIVE of about 120-150 words.
 Steps to follow:
    a- follow the instructions in the presentation
    b- think of your plot and plan your writing
    c- write your rough draft
    d- type a clean copy (in word) on your computer
    e- send it to my email address (deadline to meet:  Wednesday, 1st April)

FRIDAY, 27th MARCH

Hello my dearest students!


We are doing a test on UNIT 5 today. It is just a little challenge, no more than that, which will let you know if you have understood and learnt the contents in this unit.

Keep track of the time: Note down the time you start the exam and the time you finish it. If you need to stop doing the exam for any reason (e.g. your mother calls you, your little brother/sister needs your help/you need to go to the toilet...etc), just allow yourself more time. That's all!

TUESDAY, 24th MARCH

Good morning my beloved students!

Today we are going to focus our lesson on COMMUNICATING SKILLS. We are going to SPECULATE about a picture.

1- Open your book at page 69 and do activities 1- 2. Do them orally. Read the questions aloud and answer orally (I hope your family won't think you're going mad if they hear you talking alone!)

2- Now click HERE to get the audio for activity 3. This audio is going to be a DICTATION for you. So be ready to listen and write down what the student says about the picture in activity 3. Write it down in your notebook. Pause the audio and listen to it as many times as you need in order to write the text.
    - Now, underline the expressions in colour from exercise 2 that the student uses in the text you have written.

3- Now it is time for you to SPECULATE ABOUT A PICTURE.

      - Choose either picture A or B in activity 4.

       - Use some of the vocabulary that is offered to you in exercise 4 (above the pictures)  and add some more. Also include the expressions in colour in activity 2. Write a short paragraph (similar in length to the one in the dictation) speculating about the picture you have chosen.

      - Record your voice reading your paragraph in your mobile phone and send the audio to my email.

How are you? I know from your class teacher that you are  a bit overwhelmed with work at the moment. Sorry about that!. I wouldn't like to add more stress, really. However, we need to keep on going and do some work.

This is our lesson today (I hope it won't take you more than an hour! Let me know otherwise)

 Let's follow these steps. You can skip some explanations if you think you don't need them. It is up to you. Work at your own pace!!

 1) CHECK HOMEWORK. Be responsible and check your own work.

 In this activity you had to use the ZERO (if+ present simple / present simple) , FIRST (if+ present simple / will-future) , SECOND CONDITIONAL (if+ past simple / would-inf.) or  a TIME CLAUSE.

Some of you told me in their emails that they had problems with TIME CLAUSES. Here is a simple video to remind you about them. Just for those who need information about time clauses.

2) Now we are going to have a look at VERBS and PREPOSITIONS. Pay attention:

Certain VERBS  are usually followed by specific PREPOSITIONS. For example: listen to / participate in  / laugh at / rely on / look at / happen to / search for / wait for

Sometimes, the meaning of the verbs changes depending on the preposition. HAVE A LOOK: hear of (=to know about someone or something) (¿has oido hablar de? ¿sabes qué es/ quién es?  - 'Who is Tom Madely?'  'I have no idea. I've never heard of him    -  Have you ever heard of speed dating? (to know about someone or something) hear about (= to be told about something) (te has enterado)    - Did you hear about the fight in the club on Saturday night?    - Have you heard about Jane? She's getting married. hear from (receive an email, a phone call) ( saber de alguien)   -‘Have you heard from Ann recently?’  - Yes, she wrote to me last week

 Now you should make your own list of VERB+ PREPOSITION in your notebook.
 
Notice this:

THINK OF / THINK ABOUT THINK ABOUT (=consider, concentrate the mind on) -‘You are quiet this morning. What are you thinking about?’ - ‘I’ve thought about what you said and I’ve decided to take your advice’ - ‘Will you lend me the money?’ I’ll think about it’ THINK OF (= remember, bring to mind, have an idea, have an opinion) -‘That is a good idea. Why didn’t I think of that?’ (tener una idea) -‘What did you think of the film?’ (qué opinas) -He told me his name, but I can’t think of it now. (no me puedo acordar) *The difference between think of and think about is sometimes very small. Often you can use OF or ABOUT: - My sister is thinking of(or about) going to Canada. -When I am alone, I often thing of (or about) you.

REMIND OF / REMIND ABOUT / REMIND someone TO do something - You remind me of your mother. (me recuerdas a tu madre) - This house reminds me of the one I lived in when I was a child. (me recuerda a...) - I’m glad you reminded me about the party. ( recordarle algo a alguien) - The teacher reminded us to switch off the lights before we left. (recordarle a alguien hacer algo)

Watch them if you think you need some help with conditionals. You  might also take notes in your notebook.
If you think you have no problems with conditionals, you can just skip this part and do the activities right away. It depends on you!

Here is what we are going to do today:

1) Check your homework from Friday:
    Key to activities 2, 3 and 4 and listening on Side 2 of the worksheet

2) Now we are going to do a READING COMPREHENSION activity:
We are going to read and listen to a beautiful short story by O. Henry, an American short story writer.  Open your book at pages 64- 65. Do the activities in your notebook.

    a- Before you start reading the story do some "Critical thinking" on page 64 of your book.
        What can you infer (=deducir) about the woman in the story? Read the extracts in the yellow
         box on page 64
     
 Some help with expressions: On went her old brown jacket (= She quickly put on her old brown jacket ); on went her old brown hat (= She quickly put on her old brown hat)

    b- Read (page 65 of the book) and listen to PART I of the story. Use a dictionary (wordreference) if you need to find the meaning of expressions or words.

    c- Do activities 1 and 2 on page 64 of your book. Do them in your notebook.

    d- Now listen to  PART 2 of the story (activity 3 on page 64 of your book)
 
    e- Do activity 3 on page 64. Copy and answer the questions in your notebook.

    f- Now do activities 4 and 5 on page 64 on VOCABULARY. Do the activities in your notebook.
